Food and liquid waste were once taken to landfills without
hesitation. As environmental objectives and “the carbon footprint” became center
stage, both the food/beverage companies and the waste industry began second
guessing this old habit. BVR saw the need for companies to divert this valuable
resource from the landfill. It provides our customers with an alternative to
using the landfill as well as a beneficial resource for farmers, gardeners, and
landscaping companies. I would like to briefly summarize our composting
operation.
BVR provides containers to our customers for food/liquid waste. The food or liquid waste is transported to our facility once the containers become full. The transportation process is usually provided by our company but the waste generator can transport materials to our facility. The materials are weighed upon arrival at our facility. This allows us to have accurate information about the materials being brought into our facility, as well as the origin of the material. The food waste is then loaded into a hopper which goes directly into our vessel system. If the liquid waste is in packaging, it goes to our shredding station. The shredding station separates the liquids from the packaging. The packaging is washed and baled for recycling.
The liquids are held in a special reservoir which is immediately pumped into our vessels. Our vessels can accommodate up to 5,000 gallons of liquid per day. The vessels are loaded with a mixture of food/liquid waste, manure, brush, and grass clippings. The materials are then safely processed through decomposition in our vessel system, pathogens are eliminated, and this results in the highest quality of health safety standards. This system also allows for a rapid conversion of organic material to compost. It allows us to control the environmental conditions such as: temperature, moisture, aeration, and the ability to turn the materials. The compost comes out of the vessel and requires a short period of time for the microbial activity to stabilize and the pile to cool. The piles are monitored until the material reaches a stable state. Our compost is regularly sampled and tested for nutritional content as well as to ensure the integrity of the product. The compost is then ready for resale.
We are a state certified recycling and composting facility, permit number 100200.
